SRL Technical Services were appointed by Balfour Beatty to advise on the acoustic design of the schools which primarily involved achieving the requirements of BB93 and discharging the noise related planning conditions. All Saints Academy caters for 800 pupils and Highshore caters for 98 pupils with complex learning needs to severe learning difficulties. Floor slab soffits were left exposed for their thermal mass and cooling properties, and this presented a challenge in terms of incorporating sufficient acoustic absorption to achieve appropriate reverberation times in the teaching spaces. A combination of acoustic lighting rafts and wall panels were used to control reverberation time in line with the requirements of BB93. The acoustic lighting rafts were also positioned to reduce direct noise levels from the localised mechanical ventilation units suspended from the soffits.
