Acoustics case study

M2 Junction 5 Improvement Works

Background

At Junction 5 of the M2, the works involve the replacement of the existing roundabout with a new (flyover) interchange, providing free-flowing movement on the A249. Two new slip roads are proposed for traffic travelling from the A249 southbound to the M2 westbound and from the A249 northbound to the M2 eastbound. The proposals also include for a new link road connecting with the A249 Stockbury Roundabout.

Challenge

We were commissioned by GRAHAM Construction to prepare and submit S61 (CoPA 1974) Applications to Maidstone BC and Swale BC in respect of the construction works within and affecting their areas.

Solution

Working closely with both Borough Councils, the applications detailed the existing ambient noise levels in the area, quantified expected noise levels as a result of the works at nearby receptor locations, and assessed likely noise impacts against pre-determined noise threshold levels. Prior consent was successfully received from both Borough Councils for all works applied for, including those necessarily programmed to occur during weekends and night-time periods, during road closures.
