Noise & Vibration case study
Princess Royal University Hospital
Background
The Princess Royal University Hospital, or PRUH, is a large district general in the London Borough of Bromley. Kier were appointed to construct a new stand-alone Endoscopy Unit to the rear of the existing hospital.
Challenge
With residential dwellings and the existing hospital in close proximity, ensuring that noise and vibration did not cause a disturbance throughout the works programme, was a significant concern.
Solution
SRL assisted the project by working on behalf Kier to prepare a Section 61 (Control of Pollution Act 1974) Application, submitted to and subsequently consented by the London Borough of Bromley. The Application detailed the proposed methodologies, the associated plant and working hours, and quantitively assessed the predicted construction noise levels against prescribed threshold levels, influenced by the results of pre-development baseline surveys. In addition, the Application proposed a series of noise mitigation measures and committed to a scheme of monitoring during the works to assist in managing noise and vibration impacts.
Upon receipt of Section 61 consent from the London Borough of Bromley, our dedicated monitoring team installed and managed a number of monitoring stations on the site perimeter. These monitors communicated wirelessly to an online web portal in real time and issued live alerts upon any exceedance of the established noise and vibration thresholds. This facilitated an immediate investigation, identifying further mitigation measures, thus minimising the potential for disturbance to surrounding receptors.
