Mark Lane, London, monitoring

This was a prestigious development in the City of London within the Insurance district. Developers Mitsui Fudosan and Stanhope plc were developing a 15 storey glass curtain wall building valued at £60 million.

We were directly employed by the contractor, Sir Robert McAlpine to monitor noise, vibration and dust through the demolition period and into significant works of the construction phase.

The location of the new development in the heart of the densely populated Insurance district within the centre of London posed considerable potential problems. The Local Authority had placed onerous conditions on the developer regarding permissible noise, vibration and dust levels so that any disturbance to existing businesses was kept to the minimum.

During the demolition and construction phase, a proactive approach was taken to minimising and monitoring the potential noise/ vibration and dust impact on surrounding commercial and sensitive receivers.

A text alert system to a site based mobile phone was implemented, to alert staff if the criteria were being exceeded. This allowed our client to react immediately to mitigate any disturbance.

We provided two vibration loggers and one combined noise/dust monitor to cover the whole site, with installation, maintenance and weekly reporting on each parameter for each logger for over a year. Both units were set up so we could remotely download all the measured data to a dedicated secure server at our head office. One report was provided for all the loggers data combined and were written in a format that could be handed directly to the local authority if required.
