Pembury Hospital PFI, Royal Tunbridge Wells

Pembury Hospital was in major need of redevelopment and SRL helped our client, Laing O’Rourke, secure and deliver the PFI project throughout the bidding process, then the design and construction phases. The £225 million project was the first UK hospital where all in-patients have a bed in their own room so patient pricing was a key driver for the Trust.

The hospital needed to be delivered with good levels of acoustic privacy between all of the rooms whilst still preserving the local environment from unwanted noise. Our advice influenced changes to the intended room layout so that private discussions between doctors would not be overheard by other patients.

The site located on the edge of Pembury Woods meant that a naturally ventilated building was ideal acoustically as well as saving energy. The acoustic challenges came from the need to make sure noise did not affect the natural environment. We achieved this by having the three large stand-by generators  housed within acoustic enclosures and the chillers hidden behind a screen. We used acoustic ventilators to protect the bedrooms from noise in the busy service yard.
