Rain Noise Laboratory

The noise of rain on a roof is often overlooked in a design of a building; increased use of lightweight roof systems and skylights can result in unusable spaces if not adequately designed using accurate data.

Our rain noise test facility enables us to understand the noise level rain produces when it lands on a particular roof construction. This is often required in buildings where the occupiers need low internal noise levels and where the impact of external noise on

the internal acoustics of a building must be kept to a minimum. It is a specific requirement of the design guides for schools (BB93) and hospitals (HTM 08-01).

FAQs

Q.

What is the Rain Noise Laboratory?

A.

It is a facility to measure noise from rain on roofs and skylights, which is important for low-noise environments like schools and hospitals.

Q.

Why is rain noise testing important?

A.

Without testing, lightweight roofing systems can create excessive noise during rainfall, disrupting indoor environments.

Q.

What types of buildings benefit from products tested for rain noise specifically?

A.

Buildings with lightweight roofs or skylights, especially schools, hospitals, libraries and offices will have to ensure that the products installed have been rain tested.

Q.

How does a rain noise test work?

A.

We simulate rainfall on a roofing system or skylight and measure the resulting indoor noise to evaluate the product’s insulation properties.

We are UKAS accredited for:

  • BS EN ISO 140-18:2006
  • BS EN ISO 10140-3:2021

The team conducting, and supporting the tests are always professional, give great support, and we always come away with a great amount of test data.
