“Sounds” like a close game

After a three-year break, the annual cricket match between SRL and Sharps Redmore, for the Ian Woods Acoustic Trophy took place yesterday at the Long Melford Cricket Club. Over the course of the 16 previous encounters, there have been some close games but nothing to compare to yesterday’s game.

Having won the toss SRL decided to bowl first. The Sharps Redmore openers started well, and the rest of their team contributed to achieving a total of 136 runs from their 25 overs. In reply, SRL started slightly slower and for a while were behind the required run rate, but slowly built their innings. So, to the final over with the game still in the balance. 3 balls left and 6 runs required for the win. Swing and a miss so still 6 runs off 2 balls are required for the win. The penultimate ball was hit for 4 runs, so it was all on the last ball – 1 run to tie or 2 runs for the win. The ball is bowled and hit but does not make the boundary, the batters run and 2 runs are scored for SRL to win the game.

In the final analysis, the real winner was the game of cricket. Whilst this is a fun event for both companies there is a prize for the winning team given in memory of SRL’s founder Ian Woods. This year there was a cheque for £200, presented by SRL’s Chairman, Suzanne Woods, which will go to our nominated charity.
