Environmental Product Declarations

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardised, third-party verified document that shows the environmental impact of a product across its life cycle.

It is based on a standardised Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), so the data can be trusted and compared. The most common standard is BS EN 15804 which ensures consistent and comparable environmental impact data across building lifecycles for construction projects. The mandatory A2 amendment of this standard now requires stricter reporting.

Why should my product have an EPD?

1. Compliance

An EPD is no longer just a sustainability extra. It is a requirement for green building certification, procurement, and new EU regulations like Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

2. Transparency

EPDs are more than a compliance document. They answer detailed sustainability questions and back up environmental claims with independent verification.

3. Market positioning

An EPD keeps a product visible and competitive in the markets you sell to. It is also a useful tool for sales and marketing which gives your clients confidence in the products they are buying or investing into.

4. Continual Improvement

An EPD can help you to identify energy and carbon “hotspots” within the production chain which highlights where you can make improvements to save energy, carbon, and money.

What types of EPD do you offer?

We are able to produce EPDs that cover all lifecycle stages pictured below, including:

  1. Cradle-to-Gate with Options (most common): This includes the product (A1 – A3), construction (A4 – A5), end of life (C) and benefits, such as reuse, recovery and recycling (D).
  2. Cradle-to-Grave: This is a full LCA covering all modules from A1 to D.
  3. Cradle-to-Gate (restricted): This covers raw material extraction and the manufacturing stages of a product, including transport of the raw materials to the manufacturing site (A1 – A3). This is the minimum scope of an EPD.

What is the typical EPD Process?

We can help you to develop EPDs for your products due to the ever-changing market. More tenders, architects, buyers, and regulators are asking for verified environmental data as a starting point. To meet this need, we will tailor our service to your needs and product. Our “standard” service involves:

  1. An initial meeting to agree the system boundary (i.e. EPD “type”) for your product, including the data we require and timescales.
  2. Data collection of the product.
  3. Completion of the product LCA, following the relevant standard(s) using the world-leading OneClick LCA software.
  4. Completion of the EPD background report.
  5. Third party verification through EPD Hub.
  6. EPD publication on the EPD Hub library and an EPD “reminder” after five years, before it needs to be reviewed and reverified.
