Noise & Vibration
Ensuring noise and vibration does not exceed agreed levels is an important part of our environmental management services, using state-of-the-art technology to access real-time data remotely, to enable swift remedial action if required.
We support contractors delivering projects in all sectors, particularly in Rail and Highways, as a result of the frequent need to work at night when the potential for disturbance is higher. Our scope varies from project to project but generally includes:
- Liaising with the Local Authority and other project stakeholders to agree an approach to managing noise/vibration/dust and potentially set thresholds
- Providing input to Environmental Management Plans (e.g. CEMP), discharging planning conditions, and compiling applications for required consents (e.g. Section 61 CoPA 1974)
- Scoping, installing and managing appropriate noise/vibration/dust monitoring equipment
- Analysing the data, particularly if there are any threshold exceedances
- Helping investigate and resolve any complaints
- Implementing lessons learned.
Noise
All our unattended noise monitors allow remote access to data and instrument status for the project team. Our monitoring web portal also provides email alerts for site staff if noise thresholds are being approached or exceeded, allowing them to quickly address the cause.
Our monitors conform to BS7385 part 1 and BS5228 part 1. Our team of experienced engineers can work with your project team and stakeholders to ensure monitors are installed in the best possible position for your project.
Vibration
Our monitors log Peak Particle Velocity (PPV), Vibration Dose Value (VDV) and RMS (Root Mean Square) acceleration in three dimensions during monitoring periods to confirm to BS5228 part 2.
Our vibration monitors can be powered for a matter of months on a single set of batteries or indefinitely with a solar power option.
We will liaise with Local Authorities and other relevant project stakeholders to agree how noise or vibration will be managed, including agreeing thresholds.
Consents and plans
Our service includes help with applications for necessary consents – such as Section 61 (Control of Pollution Act 1974) – and contributing to Construction Environmental Management Plans.

CASE STUDY
Tunnelling noise & vibration solutions
The Crossrail project includes 21km of bored tunnel under the most densely populated parts of London. During the construction of the HS1 project, residents complained about noise and vibration from the Temporary Construction Railway within tunnels.
